About

The Spatula was Grama's

Hello and Welcome to my world. This blog is all about what you can do with what you have. I have been cooking my whole life and just want to get on paper what I have accomplished. We will take trips together, decide what to use in our kitchen's, play in the yard and meet friend's. I hope you will enjoy our journey.

Oh and .............

I have cooked most of my children's lives thus they were the guinea piggies for Ma. I cooked a lot of Jewish dishes as that is my children's heritage and the knowledge I got from my Nanny Lilly, Nanny Rosie and Grama Idell.

I also have a wonderful Mother in love who has introduced me to the world of all things Italian. My own mama is a great cook and with 5 children and not a lot of money she was pretty clever. My daddy was way ahead of his time making carrot shakes and giving us tiger milk energy bars when the only one who knew about that stuff was him and Jack Lalanne. I coulld have done with out the powder milk. I still gag saying it !

In 2007 I began to dabble in canning or call it preserving. My dad's mother Grama Lois was an excellent canner and cook her root cellar was filled year around and could easily feed the United States Marine Corp on a good day. I spent ever summer of my young life with her. She taught me how to cook, can and sew. My Grandpa taught me how to fish and gut them. They lived in Paradise California a wonderful place to spend my summers.

I have spent the last 7 years experimenting it has been fun and what a glorious journey and continues today.  I had no idea that it would bring me to this point in my life when all things became how might I tweak recipes a kind of a personal experiment in cooking. I have  gotten to a really loving cooking and thus canning.

I try to go organic but have found that now days this can be a tricky subject because the guidelines are not set in stone. Thus I have made a point to buy local or grow it myself. I am blessed with a yummy yard and a husband who encourages all things Lani.

In 2010 I started entering the local County Fair and actually got a few ribbons, who of thought.
This website is my way of meeting cooks from all over the world and sharing our common love. I cook, can, garden, quilt and just plan enjoy life one day at a time.

This is personal and there is no real dynamic to the style or choice of food we make. It is a one plate at a time site. I either will take from my past and or childhood memories. With help from my mom. I also have a plethora of vintage as well as new cook books. I will hope to entertain you and get you cooking with no guilt of starch, butter, glucose or other new time problems. This is just down home cooking one cook to another. Please Email me or just comment with any question or request or hey mistakes I may have made. It all work in the kitchen. No ego here!
God Bless
